What we know

The Causes
According to UNHRC, majority of climate-related migrants have to relocate due to weather-related issues including, but not limited to:
-
Floods
-
Drought and desertification
-
Extreme heat
-
Storms
-
Hurricanes
-
Cyclones
-
Tornadoes
-
-
Wildfires
-
Water and air contamination

Statistics and Numbers
Since 2008, over 376 million individuals have been displaced as a result of climate related issues, equivalent to one person every second.

In 2022 alone, 36.2 million individuals were displaced.

In 2023, 46.9 million new internal displacements were recorded. 56% of them were triggered by disasters such as:
-
Storms
-
Floods
-
Wildfires

Future Predictions
By 2050, according to the World Bank’s Groundswell report, up to 216 million people across six world regions could be forced to move internally within their countries due to:
-
Water scarcity
-
Lower crop productivity
-
Rising sea levels
If the global average sea level rises by 1.8 meters (6 feet) by 2100, 13.1 million Americans could be forced to migrate away from coastal regions. That is about 3.85% of the total population.
